Apple Pie Order - Workshops

Education     Awareness     Training . . .

The aim of EATis to provide workshops as a practical resource for Education Establishments, Agencies/Services and Groups to gain a deeper understanding of Domestic Violence/Abuse.

"There are no excuses... no rhyme or reason why so many repeat domestic treason".

Laurielorry Theatre Company takes 'everydayness' and transforms it into a profound and extraordinary performed situation. The aim of Laurielorry is to explore the comedic possibilities in performance to expose humour and pathos that not only enlightens and entertains but communicates directly with audiences.

In 1999, at the age of forty, Elaine Pantling graduated from De Montfort University with a BA Single Honours in Performing Arts. She spent the previous twenty years working as a 'Time Served Cutter' in the hosiery trade. On leaving university Elaine formed 'Laurielorry Theatre Company' and has devised, written and performed seven professional shows building up a National following for her theatre work.

What is Domestic Violence?

'Domestic Violence', also called 'Domestic Abuse', is a range of abusive behaviour within a relationship, usually going on for many months or years. It is about someone holding power and control over another using intimidation and can include physical and sexual violence as well as emotional, psychological and financial abuse.

The police receive a domestic violence call every 60 seconds... and that's a fact.

  • This workshop is designed to fully explore Domestic Violence/Abuse using five slices of pie; each slice represents a different area of abuse. The workshop helps the participant to realise that there are many strands to an abusive relationship and also helps to dispel the myth that it only happens to people on the lower end of the socio economic scale.
  • The object of the game is to take a slice of pie that represents a particular form of abuse and to explore the issues and to build a scene. The game involves characters cards taken from all walks of life from dustman to doctor, Police officer, social worker, house wife, house husband, hairdresser to barrister. Props are provided, scenarios and suggestions on style and presentation are also given. The workshop works with numbers from 5 to 30.
  • The idea is that the participants build a whole pie either in small groups or in one large group. This will then culminate in a showing or performance that in turn will bring about debate and discussion.
  • The game is led and guided by one or two leaders depending on the size of the group.

It is advisable that a member of staff or welfare officer is present during the workshop.

The Theatre of Everydayness
Elaine Pantling BA (Hons) Performing Arts

Elaine Pantling is a very skilled workshop leader who has worked with the 'Recovering Mentally ill', 'Adults with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities', 'Main Stream and Further Education'. She has experience of teaching Theatre at various levels including OCN, GCSE, A Level, HND and BA.

Elaine specialises in writing and devising for performance and the art of comedy and tragedy.

The workshops are designed to explore the everydayness of the individual, to tease out what is familiar to them and to transform what they know, into an extraordinary performed situation.

The workshops can be tailor-made to suit the needs of the group.
The aim is to excite, to facilitate, to question, to have fun and to enable people to explore their own potential.

All the above can be achieved by experiencing the theatre of everydayness.

"We are all observers of life, listening in on conversations that don't belong to us. We are collectors, imitators and distributors of regurgitated situations. A solitary figure of time and space uncovers a tale out of the 'everyday', they transform what seems ordinary and mundane into a theatrical happening".
